The ReedFile(tm) is quite simply the best tool a saxophonist or clarinetist can own.   Having the right tools for the job is half the battle.

For the Serious Saxophonist: 90% success rate on all reeds in a box!

Put an end to stuffy-tone produced from reeds that don’t seal.

Recommended by Bob Ackerman, of the Saxophone Journal (Nov 2000 issue)!

Used by the Pro’s including Don Sinta, James Houlik, and Pat LaBarbera, and so many more…

All members of the Royal City Saxophone Quartet have used the Reed File for over 20 years to ensure they get the most performance out of every reed.

The Concept:

The ReedFile is is seven inches (7″) long and one inch wide with curved teeth (14TPI) angled to “plane” the table of the reed to be perfectly flat.
Comes with a zippered case and instructions
. Fits easily in your sax or clarinet case!

Remember: sandpaper and glass only make the reed smooth not flat!  Just ask any carpenter!: you use a plane to make wood flat, and sandpaper to make it smooth. When you try a reed right from the box, there are really only a few symptoms that will produce a less-than-desirable tone, and the ReedFile can help eliminate the most common problems:

Symptom Cause Solution
Stuffy Tone Reed does not “seal” to the mouthpiece. Either the table of the reed or the mouthpiece is not perfectly flat. Air is escaping out the sides or the back of the reed. ReedFile will flatten the table surface of the reed so it seals against the mouthpiece. If your mouthpiece table is not perfectly flat, however, you will need to have it resurfaced, or buy a new mouthpiece.
Reed barely produces any tone without hard blowing Reed is too hard ReedFile will shave the reed table to a lighter thickness and an easier strength. Also, you could try the next lighter strength in a reed.
“Chirps” when articulating Tip of the reed is uneven/unbalanced. Sandpaper or Dutch Rush is best used on the wings/corners of the tip of the reed to make them even. They are vibrating at different frequencies when they have different thickness. This causes the “chirp” when  articulating.
Reed closes off when blowing Reed is too soft Reed is too soft. Usually the tip of the reed is actually too thin. Use a reed clipper or move to next higher reed-strength.
